Kumbh

It is the power of faith that can part a river, move mountains, and endure the hardships that come bundled up for being an integral part of Kumbh Mela, a congregation of millions, gathered together to be freed from the vicious earthly cycle of life and death and move towards a heavenly realm, which knows no suffering or pain. The Maha Kumbh Mela is held once in 144 years (upon the completion of 12 Purna Kumbh). Depending on what position the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter hold in that period in different zodiac signs, the venue for Kumbh Mela is decided. The calculations have been provided below for information:

    • Kumbh Mela at Allahabad
    • Kumbh Mela at Haridwar
    • Kumbh Mela at Ujjain
    • Kumbh Mela at Nashik

Bath for 'soul-cleansing' is the most important ritual in maha kumbh mela. Devotees believe that by taking a dip in the river, their sins would be forgiven.

    Kanwar Yatras

The Kanwar Yatra is a religious practice where thousands of devotees travel hundreds of miles to fetch holy water from the Ganga and retake the journey back to make offerings at different local shrines of Lord Shiva. The annual pilgrimage is made in July, the exact date time being the beginning of the "Shravan" month of the Hindu calendar.

    • During the Kanwar Yatra, the devotees of Lord Shiva carry the 'Kanwar' on both of their shoulders.
    • Numbers of makeshift accommodations are constructed across the journey where the Kanwarias can take rest for a while.
    • Some devotees travel the distance on foot while others on their personal vehicle.

This form of Shiva worship has special significance in the areas around the Ganga. An important festival with similarities to the Kanwar yatra in North India, called the Kavadi festival, is celebrated in Tamil Nadu, in which Lord Muruga is worshipped.
